The challenge
Shorter runs, more complex shapes and faster turnaround times
With run lengths of jobs becoming shorter and cut shapes becoming more complex, Gelria evolved from die cutting to cutting with a table. The market they operate in requires fast turnaround times.
After purchasing the Kongsberg X, Gelria received requests to cut simpler products. But prices in the market were under a lot of pressure at times, so they were looking for more throughput speed.
The solution
Kongsberg X and C cutting tables
Gelria purchased its first Kongsberg cutting machine in 2017 and its second one in 2019. The Kongsberg X gave them the ability to mill different types of plastics and rubber, something they couldn’t do before. The conveyor belt also gives them the ability to cut products longer than the cutting table.
Looking for more throughput speed, Gelria went to Belgium to test the Kongsberg C. Two months later, the cutting table was up and running. They were looking for a fast machine that would give good cutting results, and the Kongsberg C was perfect.
Gelria works with a lot of different materials, with different hardnesses and thicknesses. All the cutting settings are saved in the Kongsberg cutting tables. A colleague who doesn’t work that often with a certain cutting table can just click on the material and the system will automatically load all the cutting settings.
The result
More orders and increased revenue
Every week Gelria produces jobs on the cutting table that they haven’t done before. By purchasing the Kongsberg X, they have attracted and served many more new customers. The cutting table delivered a return on investment within two to three years.
Since the purchase of the new cutting machines, Gelria has seen a big increase in revenue. In the last four years, they have grown around 20% in revenue each year. That has to do with the fact that they have increased their capacity and can take on more orders.
During the day they cut the orders with short lead times and in the evening they process the orders with longer lead times. That way they make sure the cutting tables are used optimally, running most of the day.
