overview

What a digital die cutting machine replaces

A digital die cutting machine reproduces the cut and crease a steel rule die would deliver, without the die itself. Interchangeable knives, creasing wheels and routers follow the outline in your artwork, so the shape lives in the file rather than in a die you have to order, mount and store. If you produce packaging, displays, signage or finished print, a digital die cutting machine is now doing the work a die used to do.

A die still earns its place on very high-volume repeat runs, once it exists. Everything short of that, samples, versions, rush work, one-off structural jobs, moves faster and cheaper on a digital die cutting machine, because there's no die to wait on and no new setup needed per design.

A die is only one way to turn a flat sheet into a finished shape. Here's how a digital die cutting machine stacks up against the alternatives on the factors that decide the purchase.

Before you ask

Frequently asked questions

Does a digital die cutting machine use an actual die?

No. It reproduces the same cut and crease a die would, using knives, creasing wheels and routers guided by your file, with no physical die and no press.

Why is it called digital die cutting if there's no die?

The name describes the output, not the method. It's the industry term for die-quality shapes produced by a digital die cutting machine without a physical die.

Is conventional die cutting ever the better choice?

Yes, for very high-volume repeat production where the die already exists and the design stays fixed. A digital die cutting machine takes over as soon as run lengths shorten or designs change.
